The quantity and quality of special effects shots in Gone With The Wind is staggering, but this shot takes the cake. Seen here is a live action sky, a painted Tara and surrounding landscape, a miniature tree, and the live action shot of Vivien Leigh and Thomas Mitchell (or maybe stand-ins?), all combined with mathematical precision in a state of the art optical printer by effects cameraman Clarence Slifer. As if that weren’t complex enough, this is 3-strip Technicolor, so you can imagine the complications brough on by having to do this for THREE identical negatives!

GENTLEMEN : PLEASE DO NOT USE MY NAME IN ANY WAY ,

PLEASE DO NOT EVEN DIVULGE THE FACT THAT I OWN A

MACHINE , I HAVE ENTIRELY STOPPED USING THE TYPEWRITER,

FOR THE REASON THAT I NEVER COULD WRITE A

LETTER WITH IT TO ANYBODY WITHOUT RECEIVING A

REQUEST BY RETURN MAIL THAT I WOULD NOT ONLY DESCRIBE

THE MACHINE BUT STATE WHAT PROGRESS I HAD MADE IN THE

USE OF I T , ETC . , ETC . I DON ’ T LIKE TO WRITE 

LETTERS , AND SO I DON ’ T WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT

I OWN THIS CURIOSITY BREEDING LITTLE JOKER .
